MAU CHINATOWN CALENDAR 2023

Commissioned by Love Intersections

MAU Calendar is a long term artist-initiated project aiming to re-imagine the way souvenirs function as objects and as vehicles to examine lesser-known local histories, cultural identities, and issues affecting the future of Vancouver's Chinatown. Now in its fifth year, the limited-edition Risograph printed MAU Calendar continues to capture a contemporary portrait of the community while showcasing the work of local artists and community members. In 2021, VALU CO-OP and Love Intersections took over MAU from founder Elisa Yon to carry on the torch of the beloved project.

The 2023 MAU Calendar features artwork by local artists Carmen Chan, Paige Jung, Stella Zheng, Claire Douglas, Ricardo Hardy, and Kyla Yin, with translations by Christine TN Wong and layout design by Emily Cheung.

Each calendar is 10"x16", comprised of 13 unbound Risograph-prints on 60lb natural paper stock by @monikerpress, a Risograph print and publishing studio based in #chinatownyvr

2023 THEME: CHINATOWN FUTURES

Our inspiration for the 2023 theme was to think about broad, intersectional, and capacious definitions of “Chinatown futures”. Thinking about “Chinatown” as a neighbourhood, a symbol, a community, a source of nourishment; we empowered artists and contributors to take liberties with their interpretations of the theme, and how it connects to them. We hope this year’s calendar conveys to readers different imaginations of Chinatown futurity, and the deep relationships that foreground, and permeate through the artworks and words.

Special Thanks to Jen Sungshine Emily Cheung for including me in this cultural and historic project!
